Essar Steel Commissions Power Plant to Use Waste Heat as Fuel
06/11/2012 - Essar Steel India Limited has commissioned a 19MW heat recovery power plant at its Hazira complex. Using heat generated during the manufacturing process, the plant will provide power internally, creating an energy efficient complex and reducing the company’s power costs.

“We are a responsible steel producer; our focus is to have facilities which are both cost efficient and environmentally friendly,” commented Dilip Oommen, CEO of Essar Steel India. “It is a matter of pride for us that the entire process for this project from concept to commissioning was carried out by the Essar team.”
By creating enough power for almost 10,000 homes, the new plant will provide the company significant cost savings. In addition, it will help address the nation’s power deficit by not drawing this power from the grid and will not use scarce natural resources. The company will also benefit from the availability of carbon credits due to the reduction in the emission of greenhouse gasses.
The Essar Group previously created a similar facility at its Essar Steel Algoma Inc. operations in Canada, where the company has a co-gen facility. With the skills learned in Canada, Essar is replicating this success in India.
By reducing thermal emissions, generating power at a lower cost, and better utilizing waste heat through electricity production, the company said is creating a “win-win situation” by not only helping the environment but by also lowering its position on the cost curve.
