Essar Steel Algoma To Supply Bridge Plate for Canadian Project
09/17/2015 - Essar Steel Algoma has won a large order for structural steel to be used on Canada’s Champlain Bridge project, the company has announced.
The company said the order, which is for bridge plate, represents about 20 percent of the project’s total steel requirements. The company would not say how many tons had been ordered.
The bridge is to span 3.4 km across the St. Lawrence between Montreal and South Shore. It is being designed with six lanes for vehicular traffic, plus another two to accommodate a light-rail system. It also will have a lane for pedestrians and bicyclists.
“Algoma has a rich 115-year steelmaking tradition here in Canada, making steel for bridges, ships, wind towers and more,” said Essar Steel Algoma president and CEO Kalyan Ghosh in a statement.
“We are very proud to be a chosen supplier to one of Canada’s most critical infrastructure investments.“
The company said it sells on average 100,000 tons of plate into the North American infrastructure market annually.
