In honor of Earth Day, Essar Steel Algoma participated in the community clean-up on 22 April 2013 led by the City of Sault Ste. Marie. Essar’s participation included a coordinated housekeeping blitz throughout the steel works in addition to a clean-up at the facility’s four gates, along its property perimeter and at its Conmee Avenue Projects facility.
As a sure sign of spring, the Essar street sweepers are back in motion, helping to reduce the amount of air-born dust stirred up by prevailing winds and material movement. In addition, the company is now entering the third and final phase of its demolition program. Buildings targeted for demolition in this phase include No. 1 Concast, the open hearth, the former Furnace Pits Buildings, No. 1 steelmaking shop, and the 25”, 45” and 46” mills. It is estimated that over 20,000 tons of scrap metal will be reclaimed during this phase and recycled in the steelmaking process.
“At Essar Steel Algoma, we recognize the benefits of sound waste management and housekeeping practices toward improved safety and reduced environmental impact. To this end we strive to provide a clean and professional work environment for our employees and to be a good corporate neighbor. We commend the City of Sault Ste. Marie on their leadership through the Earth Day 20 Minute Makeover event and are proud to participate in such a valuable initiative,” the company said.
