Essar Steel Algoma, USW Ratify Collective Agreement

Essar Steel Algoma Inc. and USW L2724—the union representing the company's technical, professional, and front line management employees—have ratified a collective agreement. The new agreement came into effect August 1, 2010, for a four-year term.

Essar Steel Algoma says that the agreement allows for “responsible monetary improvements” that recognize the important role of its employees while providing for certain changes that the company requires to be competitive.

The two parties agreed to take the mediator's recommendation to settle to their principals and membership for ratification. The recommendation would have been rendered null and void had it not been ratified by midnight July 31, 2010.

A member of the Essar Group, Essar Steel Algoma Inc. is based in Sault Ste. Marie, Ont. As a fully integrated steel producer, the company derives its revenues primarily from the manufacture and sale of hot- and cold-rolled steel products including sheet and plate.
