Equipment Upgrade Helps ArcelorMittal Expand Piling Products Portfolio
11/23/2015 - ArcelorMittal’s Belval sheet piling mill in Luxembourg has put a new SMS group Compact Roller Straightener into service, allowing the mill to expand its product portfolio, SMS has announced.
The Belval mill is the world’s largest hot rolled sheet piling mill, and the straightener is capable of handling the largest sheet piles currently available anywhere in the market, SMS said.
The straightener, which features a fully hydraulic adjustment system, is the first of its kind to be used exclusively for sheet piles, according to SMS. It has been specially designed for straightening Z-type and U-type sheet piles as well as flat sheet piles.
SMS said the straightener features a double-supported design instead of the conventional cantilever design, providing for a balanced force distribution and, as a result, improved straightening, especially for extra-wide sheet piles.
The manipulator can change all nine straightening rollers in less than 40 minutes. To facilitate roller changing, operator side housing can be moved out, SMS said.
SMS supplied the mechanical equipment, electrics and automation, the media supply systems, and all of the roller change equipment.
SMS said it completed the project in four-and-a-half weeks.
