EPA to Hold Hearing on Draft U.S. Steel Permit for Gary Works

U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region 5 has set the date, time, and place for the public hearing on U.S. Steel’s draft wastewater permit for Gary Works.

The permit, which is for the steel mill to discharge into Lake Michigan, the Grand Calumet River and Stockton Pond, was developed by Indiana Department of Environmental Management. U.S. Steel’s Gary Works is the largest fully integrated steel mill in the U.S.

EPA notified the Indiana Department of Environmental Management on Oct. 1 regarding its objections to certain parts of the permit. Those objections—along with additional objections that EPA raised later in October—must be resolved before the permit can be issued.
The purpose of the hearing is to listen to comments about EPA's objections to the draft permit. In addition, comments will also be accepted on aspects of the draft permit that were not addressed by EPA’s objections. Written and oral comments will be accepted following a brief presentation by EPA.

The meeting will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. and 6 to 8:30 p.m. on Dec. 11 in the Savannah Auditorium of Indiana University Northwest. EPA Regional Administrator Mary A. Gade will chair the hearing.
