EPA Honors ArcelorMittal USA for Significantly Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions

ArcelorMittal USA is among a unique group that is being honored by the EPA for its accomplishments in 2007 in reducing greenhouse gas emissions through energy efficiency.

Award-winning organizations are highlighted in a report titled, "Profiles in Leadership, 2008 Energy Star Award Winners." The report highlights 74 organizations across many sectors of the U.S. economy, including schools, hospitals, real estate, manufacturing, chemicals and home building. Award winners were selected from over 12,000 organizations that partner in the Energy Star program.

"EPA applauds these organizations for preserving our environment and our energy resources," said EPA Administrator Stephen L. Johnson. "Whether you are running a business or a school, these energy all-stars prove a brighter future starts with each of us."

In its report, EPA recognized ArcelorMittal USA as an Energy Star Partner of the Year. The company has a goal to reduce energy intensity in its U.S. operations by 6% over a three-year period. With the support of Energy Star tools and other resources from EPA, which the company partnered with two year ago, ArcelorMittal USA has continued to develop its corporate culture to support energy efficiency. Specific accomplishments include:

  • Achieving nearly half the savings toward the company's goal in year one, resulting in a reduction in energy cost of 4% on a constant-price basis.
  • Establishing corporate energy management as an ongoing process that continues after initial goals are achieved and becomes a company-wide, continuous commitment to energy reduction.
  • Benchmarking energy consumption in all facilities, and comparing energy management systems with those of leading ENERGY STAR partners.
  • Creating best practice sharing groups known as "agoras" across the company's plants to identify improvements in core processes. Fourteen of the company’s plants also participated in the no-cost plant energy evaluations provided by the Department of Energy's Save Energy Now program.
To continue making corporate energy management a priority, ArcelorMittal's President and CEO has established 2008 as a year of operating excellence and energy efficiency.

EPA’s Energy Star program also helped Americans save $16 billion on their energy bills in 2007, and also helped them to avoid greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to those of 27 million vehicles. To date, more than 2.5 billion Energy Star qualified products have been sold, and nearly 840,000 new homes and 4000 office buildings, schools, hospitals, and public buildings have earned the Energy Star. Energy Star qualified products, homes, and buildings provide the quality, features, and personal comfort today's consumers expect.

Energy Star was introduced by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in 1992 as a voluntary market-based partnership to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through increased energy efficiency. Today, in partnership with the U.S. Department of Energy, Energy Star offers businesses and consumers energy-efficient solutions to save energy, money, and help protect the environment for future generations. More than 12,000 organizations are Energy Star partners committed to improving the energy efficiency of products, homes, buildings and businesses.
