Ellwood Quality Steel Co., New Castle, Pa., has put a new EAF Gunning Robot into operation.

The new installation, which is designed to facilitate semiautomatic hot repair of Ellwood’s 53-ton EAF, consists of a METOP gunning robot and two type EKS-K gunning machines. The gunning machines are equipped with a mechanical dosing system to ensure an even material flow. The system is capable of reaching gunning capacities up to 200 kg/minute with low rebound.

Supplied by Velco GmbH of Germany, the new installation uses Allen Bradley ControlLogix PLC and radio remote control. The new robot can also be used for well-aimed placement of bottom material in the furnace hearth.
