Eleven-Month Stainless Import Totals Dip 6.5% below YTD 2006

Total stainless imports reached 711,028 tons through the first eleven months of 2007 (YTD 2007) a 6.5% decrease compared to YTD November 2006, according to the latest report from the Specialty Steel Industry of North America (SSINA). Total specialty imports (including stainless, alloy and tool steels) reached 909,285 tons over the same period, a 1.6% decrease compared to YTD November 2006.
 
Specific product lines experienced increases and decreases in imports, domestic consumption and import penetration over the first eleven months of 2007 as compared to the first eleven months of 2006.
 
Stainless steel sheet/strip YTD November 2007 imports were 389,046 tons, an 18.8% decrease compared to YTD November 2006. U.S. consumption was 1,401,536 tons over the same period, an 18.1% decrease; eleven-month import penetration was 27.8%, down 0.2% from 2006.
 
Stainless steel plate YTD November 2007 imports were 138,010 tons, a 38.4% increase compared to YTD November 2006. U.S. consumption was 317,914 tons over the same period, a 2% decrease; and eleven-month import penetration was 43.4%, a 12.7 percentage point increase.
 
Stainless steel bar YTD November 2007 imports were 112,642 tons, a 3.2% increase compared to YTD November 2006. U.S. consumption was 210,258 tons over the same period, a 1.5% decrease; and eleven-month import penetration was 53.6%, a 2.5 percentage point increase.
 
Stainless steel rod YTD November 2007 imports were 28,592 tons, a 1.9% increase compared to YTD November 2006. U.S. consumption was 58,628 tons over the same period, an 8.6% decrease; and eleven-month import penetration was 48.8%, a five percentage point increase.
 
Stainless steel wire YTD November 2007 imports were 42,739 tons, a 3.7% decrease compared to YTD November 2006. U.S. consumption was 75,633 tons over the same period, a 2.3% decrease; and eleven-month import penetration was 56.5%, down 0.8% from 2006.
 
Imports of total stainless steel (comprising the foregoing product lines) in the first eleven months of 2007 were 711,028 tons, a 6.5% decrease compared to YTD November 2006. U.S. consumption was 2,063,969 tons over the same period, a 13.6% decrease compared to the first eleven months of 2006. Eleven-month import penetration was 34.4%, a 2.6 percentage point increase.
 
Alloy tool steel YTD November 2007 imports were 94,813 tons, a 1.7% increase compared to YTD November 2006. U.S. consumption and import penetration over the period were not calculable.
 
Electrical steel YTD November 2007 imports were 103,443 tons, a 46.4% increase compared to YTD November 2006. U.S. consumption was 396,928 tons over the same period, a 1.1% decrease from November 2006; and eleven-month import penetration was 26.1%, an 8.5 percentage point increase.
 
Imports of total specialty steel (comprising stainless steel, alloy tool steel and electrical steel) in YTD November 2007 were 909,285 tons, a 1.6% decrease compared to YTD November 2006; U.S. consumption was 2,540,249 tons, an 11.2% decrease; eleven-month import penetration was 35.8%, a 3.5 percentage point increase.
