Egyptian Rebar Maker Inaugurates New Steel Shop
09/16/2016 - Egypt’s El Marakby Steel has fired up a new meltshop and caster at its rebar plant in Giza, allowing it to make steel in-house.
Supplied by SMS group, the production setup includes a 45-ton electric arc furnace, a ladle furnace, and a three-strand billet caster. The equipment is designed to produce 350,000 metric tons annually.
“By producing billets in-house, we create value locally and strengthen our competitiveness by reducing our dependence on hard currencies. Additionally, the new plant allows us to expand our range of steel grades and produce rebars extremely flexibly,” said El Marakby chief executive Hassan El Marakby.
According to SMS, the project is meant to better position the company as Egypt expands its road network, work that it is closely connected to the country’s recent expansion of the Suez Canal.
