DRI Plant Sets New Performance Record
01/25/2021 - A Midrex Technologies direct reduction plant in Algeria has set a new production record, making more than 2.23 million tons of direct reduced iron (DRI) last year.
According to Midrex, the output of the Tosyali Algérie A.Ş. facility is a world record for a single direct reduction module.
“We congratulate the management and staff of Tosyali Algérie for their continued excellence in plant operation despite the unforeseen challenges posed by the global pandemic in 2020. Setting the DRI production record is a real testament to the skill and know-how of Tosyali in coordinating the start-up and operations of not only the world’s largest direct reduction plant but also the start-up of their adjacent pellet plant and steel mill," said Midrex president and chief executive Stephen C. Montague.
Hot DRI made up almost 72% of total production at the mill’s electric arc furnace, Midrex said, and will enable future growth. Hot DRI is expected to help increase billet production and boost rebar output to more than 3 million tons annually.
