Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction Qualifies Tenaris Mill in Romania

Production automation, a corporate quality system and a dedicated team were the key factors leading to the qualification of Tenaris’s Silcotub mill in Zalau, Romania, as a tubing supplier for Korea’s Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction’s boiler and HRSG needs.
On 24 September, representatives from the quality control, Non Destructive Testing (NDT) and purchasing teams of Korean Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction (DHIC) visited the hot rolling mill, the new finishing line, and laboratory in order to qualify the mill as a supplier of tubes for boilers and HRSG.
“I gladly inform you that Silcotub was evaluated as a Qualified Manufacturer for boiler and HRSG tubes. NDT was excellent and we had no choice but to qualify Silcotub without any doubts,” announced Hyunyong Park, DHI Purchasing Manager, on 16 October.
During the visit DHIC was impressed with the dedication of the team and the quality control system. In the rolling mill, the automation was particularly appreciated while in the non-destructive testing line, the skills of the people, the inspection process, the operative practices and procedures to control defects were object of thorough analysis. The new, state-of-the-art finishing line was also visited and the procedures to handle 26-meter long tubes for HRSG needs and to ensure consistent product quality were explained.
HSE compliance and reduced lead-times to reach key projects in the Saudi Arabian power generation market were other factors that contributed to the qualification.
Prior to the Romanian mill’s qualification, DHIC has been buying from Tenaris’s facilities in Italy a range of different products: from hot rolled – both MPM and transversal- to cold drawn in small, medium and expander diameter tubes in low- and medium-alloy steels for gas cycle and coal fired power plants.
Since 2011, Tenaris has been supplying tubes for Doosan’s power generation projects in Vietnam, Saudi Arabia and India.
