Don B. Daily Memorial Fund Selects Recipients

The Steel Manufacturers Association (SMA) and the Association for Iron & Steel Technology (AIST) Foundation are proud to announce the first-year recipients of the newly established Don B. Daily Memorial Fund to Promote Steel Industry Safety and Health.

The Don B. Daily Memorial fund was created to commemorate the life and industry service of Don B. Daily, a compassionate man who truly cared about the safety of all employees working in the steel industry. His enduring mark on the steel industry of North America has been the establishment of numerous safety and health initiatives that have significantly improved the workplace.

“The AIST Foundation is extremely proud with the awarding of the Don Daily grants to these three prestigious universities. When completed, these university projects will provide unique and long-lasting contributions specifically designed to improve the safety programs all across the industry,” said Tom Russo, AIST Foundation President. “The legacy of Don Daily’s advocacy to improve safety in the workplace is now preserved through the combined efforts provided by these inaugural awards.”

The 2011–2012 Don B. Daily Memorial recipients include:

·         Dr. Alan P. Druschitz, Associate Professor, Department of Materials Science and Engineering, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, Blacksburg, Va. Lynn Akers from Steel Dynamics Inc.–Roanoke Bar Division will serve as mentor.
·         Dr. Joseph C. Musto, Professor and Mechanical Engineering Program Director, Mechanical Engineering Department, Milwaukee School of Engineering, Milwaukee, Wis. Kevin Burg from Charter Steel will serve as mentor.
·         Dr. Jochen Teizer, Assistant Professor, Civil and Environmental Engineering, Georgia Technological University, Atlanta, Ga. Matt Moore from Gerdau Cartersville will serve as mentor.

The Don B. Daily Memorial Fund challenges North American university teams (students and professors) to submit proposals for grant funding in the theme area of safety and health awareness within the steel manufacturing industry. The dual objective of the fund is to promote a safe workplace for the steel manufacturing industry and to increase the number of students studying health and safety awareness relative to the manufacturing environment.

“SMA very much appreciates the generous support of its member companies, as well as that of the AIST Foundation,” said Thomas A. Danjczek, SMA President. “These awards will bring real benefit by improving safety performance in the steel industry, adding to Don’s great legacy.” The Don B. Daily Memorial Fund has raised more than US$131,390, and an additional US$100,000 was matched by the AIST Foundation for a total of US$231,390.
