Direct Quenching System Now in Service at Nucor Mill
07/19/2017 - Nucor Corp.'s Tuscaloosa, Ala., plant has put a Danieli direct quenching system into service, the equipment supplier said on Wednesday.
In an announcement, Danieli said the system is distinctive because it can process the mill’s entire range of strip and plate thicknesses and grades.
“Moreover, the new cooling rates now available open the opportunity for Nucor to develop new steel grades, (such as) bainitic steel grades for improved toughness, wear-resistant steel grades, and martensitic steel grades,” Danieli said in a statement.
In addition to the equipment, Danieli supplied the automation and process control system that’s needed to allow for fully automatic setup of system components, pairing strip and plate cooling with desired metallurgical properties. It also provided a Coil Quality Estimator system, a mathematical model for predicting a product’s mechanical properties in real time.
Hot tests and commissioning were carried out during normal production, Danieli said.
