Demolition Awaits Iconic Weirton Steel BOP Shop
03/08/2019 - Another piece of U.S. steelmaking history is headed to the scrap yard.
On Saturday, demolition crews will detonate explosives and collapse what remains of the old Weirton Steel BOP shop in Weirton, W.Va., reports The (Wheeling, W.Va.) Intelligencer.
According to The Intelligencer, the shop, which dominated the Weirton skyline for decades, was described as a "preview of the mill of the future" when it opened in 1967.
"The BOP brought together three key processes — basic oxygen steel production, vacuum degassing and continuous casting — operating for the first time in a high-tonnage operation," it said.
