Danieli Wins Contract for South African Hot-Rolled Mill
02/07/2023 - Danieli has been contracted to build a complete, narrow- and medium-width hot-strip plant for South Africa’s Scaw Metals, the company has announced.
Danieli said the project includes an electric arc furnace, slab caster and hot strip mill and other ancillary equipment, such as the reheat furnace and water treatment plants. The plant, which will produce strip in thicknesses from 1.2 mm to 8.0 mm is meant to supply the downstream pipe mills of the Barnes Group, which is Scaw Metals’ controlling shareholder, and other flat steel consumers in sub-Saharan Africa.
Start-up is set for March 2024.
Danieli said the plant’s EAF will be powered by an existing 100-MVA transformer and will melt scrap and direct reduced iron. The furnace will feed a single-strand slab caster that can produce up to 650,000 metric tons annually.
