Danieli is conducting a major upgrade of Republic Engineered Products’ 200-ton EAF at the company’s Canton, Ohio, facility.
The EAF upgrade features a new upper shell with water-cooled panels, new Hi Jet units for oxygen and carbon injection, and a new Hi-Reg Plus regulation system. The new Hi Jet system will provide more efficient oxygen and carbon injection, which will facilitate more effective foaming slag and liquid steel homogenization.
Following the upgrade, Republic expects to improve EAF productivity by as much as 20%, and to decrease electrical energy consumption by as much as 35-kWh/ton.
The EAF upgrade is part of a complete expansion of Republic’s Canton steelmaking facilities. The expansion project also includes a 200-ton ladle furnace, vacuum degassing station and a 5-strand FastCast bloom caster, also supplied by Danieli and presently under installation. Startup of the upgraded steelmaking facilities is scheduled between the end of year 2005 and early 2006.
