Danieli to Upgrade DMKD Bloom Caster

OJSK Dneprovsky Iron & Steel Integrated Works (DMKD), Ukraine, has awarded a contract to Danieli for a major upgrade of its 6-strand, 14-meter radius continuous casting machine to enable production of large-size round blooms.

The upgraded bloom caster will be capable of producing over 700,000 tonne/year. Production will be divided between the existing 335- x 400-mm rectangular section and the new, 400- and 450-mm diameter round blooms, in high-quality steel grades for piping and other various applications.

To this end, Danieli ill install new moulds (with radioactive mould level control) for rounds. Danieli Rotelec mould EMS will be employed to achieve high subsurface and internal quality. The existing mechanical oscillating tables will be converted to hydraulic drive with the target of obtaining high surface quality for the whole casting range. New water cooling controls will be implemented for the primary and secondary cooling system, and a new air-mist cooling technology will be applied for the round casting.

Danieli’s supply will also include a new Danieli Automation CCM control system.

The caster upgrade is being carried out within the framework of a large-scale expansion of the Dneprovsky works, which also includes a new 1.2-million tonne/year Danieli superflexible bar and wire rod rolling mill. Startup of the upgraded caster is scheduled to take place by mid 2008.
