Danieli to Supply Jumbo-Size EAF Meltshop for Tokyo Steel

Danieli Centro Met will supply a complete new meltshop for Tokyo Steel, Japan, to be installed at the Tahara Plant, close to Nagoya City, in Honshu Island.

The new steelmaking and refining facility will include all equipment and auxiliary services needed to produce up to 2.6 million tonnes/year of low- and ultra-low carbon and Al-killed grades. The facility will feed a slab caster and flat rolling mill.

The new meltshop will feature a 420-tonne EAF that Danieli describes as the largest and most powerful EAF ever built. The twin-electrode DC EAF will be equipped with the Consteel® system under an exclusive agreement between Danieli and Tenova. The full-platform EAF also will be equipped with multiple-point oxygen and carbon injectors, supplied with a fully independent valve-regulation system for each injection unit.

The new EAF’s unique capacity will allow Tokyo Steel to operate with only one large-size unit, rather than two or more smaller units, guaranteeing the required production rate and quality and providing the best possible meltshop labor cost optimization.

Final product quality requirements will be assured by a corresponding-size ladle furnace and a twin vacuum system, installed downstream of the EAF. A new fume treatment plant also will be supplied to serve the new melting and refining units.

Danieli will also provide full automation system, based on L1 and L2, with dedicated PLCs and HMI, which will fully guarantee automatic process setting and control for the new EAF, LF, VD, and FTP.

The new steelmaking and refining plant startup is scheduled for the second half of 2009.
