Danieli to Supply DR-EAF Meltshops for Suez Steel and Emirates Steel Industries

Suez Steel Co. (Egypt) has awarded an order to Danieli for an innovative 2 million tonnes/year integrated minimill.

The complex, which will be built in the record time of 30 months, will feature the largest Direct Reduction plant ever built—a Megamodule capable of producing 2 million tonnes/year of metallic iron. The Megamodule will be integrated with an electric meltshop and conticaster that will produce billets and beam blanks that will be rolled into large-sized steel beams.

In addition to the high levels of technology that will be incorporated throughout the plant, the complex will also feature a high level of integration between processes, including continuous hot charge between the Direct Reduction plant and the EAF. This direct link will help to increase productivity while reducing both energy consumption and environmental impact.

According to Danieli, the contract for the supply of technological equipment for the new Egyptian iron and steel amounts to Euro 260 million and involves an overall investment of approximately Euro 550 million.

Danieli also was recently awarded a contract by ESI (Emirates Steel Industries), controlled by GHC (General Holding Corp.), to supply a new steelmaking complex that will produce 1.4 million tonnes/year of long products. The complex will be installed at Mussafah (Emirate of Abu Dhabi), doubling that plant’s current capacity.

Danieli’s scope of supply for the project includes a direct reduction plant with an annual production capacity of 1.6 million tonnes of sponge iron, as well as a meltshop and conticaster designed to produce billets, blooms, and beam blanks. This plant is duplicates a project that was awarded to Danieli in January 2006 that is still in the process of completion.

The total amount of the investment is about 1 billion dollars, with Danieli supplying equipment and services worth 750 million dollars.
