Danieli to Provide Semicontinuous Hot Strip Mill for Chengde

Chengde Iron and Steel Group, P.R. China, recently signed a contract with Danieli for the installation of a 1780-mm hot strip mill capable of producing over 3.3 million tonnes/year of hot rolled strip. This project follows a previous order from Tangshan Guofeng Group, which was finalized in December 2006.

The new plant will comprise three main sections plus infrastructure and auxiliary facilities. The first section consists of slab reheating furnaces, primary descaling, and a reversing rolling stand. The reheat furnaces will be capable of processing slabs 180 to 200 mm thick, 950 to 1650 mm wide, and 6 to 12.5 meters long. To help boost product quality, this section will also include a high-pressure descaling system prior to the high reduction mill.

In the second section, the temperature of the intermediate strip will be maintained and equalized in the coil box in preparation for the finishing mill.

The finishing mill includes seven 4-high stands, equipped with fast-response HAGC, positive heavy bending and roll shifting. The mill is designed to produce strip thicknesses ranging from 1.2 to 19.0 mm in widths of up to 1650 mm. The last section includes an advanced and flexible cooling section at the exit of finishing mill. This will support the mill’s ability to produce a wide product mix, including API X70 and HSLA grades. Downcoilers and coil handling facilities will complete the complex.

Chengde's new hot strip mill features proven Danieli technologies that will allow the hot rolled strip to be produced with better dimensional tolerances and mechanical properties than those currently required by the market, with advantages in terms of revenues and better environmental impact. Plant start up is scheduled for the second quarter of 2008.
