Danieli Morgårdshammar to Upgrade Stahl Gerlafingen Section Mill
03/17/2008 - Danieli Morgårdshammar will upgrade AFV Beltrame’s Grobstraße section mill with the installation of its profile sizing process as well as a new reversing breakdown mill, new ultra-flexible reversing pre-finishing mill, and new universal finishing sizing stand.
AFV Beltrame has contracted Danieli Morgårdshammar for a major upgrade of its “Grobstraße” section mill in Gerlafingen, Switzerland. The upgrade will target enhanced operating flexibility, an expanded range, and improved quality of the finished products.
Danieli will completely re-arrange the rolling mill with the installation of its PSP (Profile Sizing Process) for the production of beams and sections. This will include the installation of a new reversible breakdown mill stand, new Ultra Flexible Reversing pre-finishing mill, and new Universal Finishing sizing stand.
Danieli will provide complete upstream and downstream mechanization services for the new housingless breakdown mill, which will have a 1100-mm maximum roll diameter, and will take up to 370x170-mm blooms and up to 330x260-mm beam blanks. The new pre-finishing mill, which will have a 950-mm maximum roll diameter, will comprise three heavy-duty housingless-type mill stands operating in two-high universal or horizontal mode, depending on the roll pass requirements. The housingless universal finishing stand will have an 860-mm maximum roll diameter.
Danieli will also widen the existing cooling bed, complete with a water cooling system, new layer formation, and delivery table. Danieli will also supply new product finishing facilities, with heavy-duty straightener, two cold saws, and a 24-meter long double-head magnetic stacker.
The first stage of the upgrade will enable production of 100- to 180-mm H-beams, 140- to 180-mm I-beams, 140- to 240-mm channels, and 140-mm angles and flats, at rates of 120 tonne/hour. After the future enlargement of the cooling bed, the range will be extended for the production of up to 200-mm H-beams, 300-mm I-beams, 300-mm channels, and 200-mm angles.
Danieli Automation will provide the electricals, automation and process control systems. Startup of the upgraded plant is to take place in two stages, beginning with the breakdown mill in March. The remaining portion is scheduled to be completed in October 2009.
