Danieli Lands Order for Bar Mill Caster, Secondary Metallurgy Station
12/19/2019 - Nucor Corp. has chosen Danieli to provide a new 4-strand billet caster and secondary metallurgy station for its Kankakee bar mill in Bourbonnais, Ill., USA, the equipment supplier has announced.
According to Danieli, the caster will run commercial grades, low-carbon, peritectic and medium-carbon grades. It will be equipped with Danieli’s Fast Cast Cube oscillator (FCC) with a Hy-Power actuator, which will optimize casting stability and product quality while substantially improving caster up-time by reducing maintenance activities.
The caster also will be designed to allow for future submerged casting, Danieli said.
The new stirring station will be installed in-line with the electric arc furnace tapping car and will feature an operator-friendly layout with C-shape cars and an automatic ladle lifting system.
Ferroalloys will be automatically fed at the stirring station through a dedicated material handling system designed to be upgraded in the future in order to add automatic tapping functions, Danieli said.
The project includes new level 1 and level 2 automation, and the new caster will be equipped with Danieli Automation's Q3 Intelligence capability.
