Danieli: HBIS Direct Reduction Plant Will Be in a Green Class of Its Own
12/10/2020 - China’s Hebei Iron & Steel Group’s (HBIS) planned direct reduction plant, when completed in 2021, will be the lowest carbon-emitting direct reduced iron (DRI) plant in the world, according to one of its technology partners.
According to Danieli, the plant, which will utilize its Energiron technology, will utilize a gas mix of 30% coke oven offgas and 70% hydrogen from external sources.
As a result, its carbon emissions will be as low as 250 kg/ton of DRI, Danieli said.
"Furthermore, the carbon dioxide will be selectively recovered by a CO2 removal unit included in the basic Energiron DR technology process scheme, and part of it will be reutilized in downstream processes — carbon capture and use or storage. This would lead to a final net emission of just about 125 kg of CO2 per ton of DRI,” Danieli said.
Danieli developed the Energiron technology in partnership with Tenova.
“The order for the first DRI plant in China placed by HBIS is a notable milestone for China and its steelmaking community, paving the way to the transition from the carbon-based BF route to gas-based DRI technology and electric steelmaking,” Danieli said.
