Danieli Davy Distington to Supply Slab Caster for Baosteel Group

Pudhong Iron & Steel Co. Ltd., part of Baosteel Group, P.R. China, has awarded a contract to Danieli to install a new Danieli Davy Distington slab caster in its LuoJin plant.

The LuoJin machine is a single-strand caster conceived for the production of more than 1.5 million tonne/year of prime quality slabs in low, medium, and high carbon as well as peritectic, special, and tool steel grades. The slab size, designed for plate mill feedstock, ranges from 1500 to 2300 mm in width, and from 200 and 250 mm in thickness.

The caster roll diagram was selected based on the stringent quality requirements for plate grades application, and features a vertical-curved design with a 2.6-meter vertical length, 9.5-meter main radius, multiple split rolls, and continuous bending and unbending profile. The caster containment exceeds 35-meters, allowing a maximum casting speed of 2.1 meter/minute.

The machine will be equipped with Danieli’s patented INMO mold with in-line width and taper adjustment capability, as well as mold thermal mapping, hydraulic oscillation, and air-mist secondary cooling controlled by an L2 dynamic mathematical modem. It will also feature Danieli’s OPTIMUM segments for the application of Dynamic Soft Reduction with a liquid pool prediction mathematical model.

Danieli’s scope of supply includes key mechanical components as well as a Danieli Automation Level 1 and Level 2 automation and process control system.

This is the fourth order for slab casters that Baosteel Group has placed with Danieli in the last two years. Previous and ongoing installations have included the twin-strand Caster No. 4 at Baosteel’s Shanghai plant, which has been in operation since December 2006; a new single-strand Caster No. 3 at the Pudong plant, which is now in its final construction phase; and the revamping of the twin-strand Caster No. 6 at Shanghai plant, which has just been commissioned.
