Danieli Corus to Design Blast Furnace for Nucor’s Greenfield Ironmaking Plant

Danieli Corus has received an order from Nucor Corp. to design and supply a greenfield blast furnace plant and related installation parts for the new iron–making facility that may be built in St. James Parish, La. As announced in mid-May, Nucor has applied for a permit to build the facility on the banks of the Mississippi river near the town of Convent; this is the only U.S. location still under consideration.

The new facility—Nucor Steel Louisiana—would produce 3 million tons of pig iron per year, giving Nucor enhanced control over their raw material supplies. The new facility also represents a breakthrough for the North American steel industry, as it will house the first new Blast Furnace commissioned on the continent in 30 years at the time it is commissioned.

Danieli Corus has supported Nucor through 2007 in the feasibility studies for this entire project, and has now been awarded the project under commercial terms. The Danieli Corus scope of the contract as part of the development of the entire greenfield facility will include the furnace (including lining and cooling systems), hot blast system, slag granulation plant, gas gleaning plant, charging conveyor belt, and pulverized coal injection system. Danieli Corus will also design and supply the cast house, stock house, and top-gas recovery turbine, and will also provide automation, training, and operational assistance

Additional installations to be erected by Danieli Corus will include the coke plant, power plant, oxygen plant, and filter plant, as well as harbor, docks and quays, and other material handling systems. All installation parts will be designed and built in full accordance with Danieli Corus’s design philosophies to support reliable low-cost, high-productivity ironmaking through process optimization and long campaign lives.

This is the second order Danieli Corus has received in the past year for a large greenfield blast furnace. Work started on the other project, which is located in Alchevsk, Ukraine, in 2007.
