Danieli Corus Modernizes China’s Largest Blast Furnace
03/18/2025 - The largest blast furnace in China, at 5,800 cubic meters, is back in operation at Jiangsu Shagang Group’s Zhangjiagang plant following its conversion to plate cooling.
Danieli Corus, the executor of the modernization project, said the intention was to enable longer furnace usage based on stave cooling. To this end, they converted the bosh, belly and lower stack zones to the company’s high conductivity lining design including copper plate coolers and graphite refractory. They also installed a heat loss monitoring system for better process control.
Meeting their project’s objective, the company reported the average shell temperatures have remained below 60°C and the cooling system has proven its ability to handle high heat loads. The coke rate went down 6% from before the modernization, achieving a rate of 326 kg/tHM.
