Danieli Completes Line Modifications At Nucor Plant

In an announcement, Danieli said it installed new degreasing and quenching sections, replacing equipment that had been supplied by other manufacturers. The certificates were signed in June, Danieli said.

Danieli said the new degreasing section is providing for cleaner strip and better reflectivity; about 40% less dross in the pot; and improved final product quality. And, it said, the new cleaning section will allow the mill to galvanize its products without strip surface contamination.

Danieli Automation supplied the electric and automation control systems for the new section, which were integrated with the existing Siemens platform.

As part of the project, Nucor and Danieli engineers collaborated on designing a temporary by-pass below the old cleaning section, which minimized downtown time and allowed the plant to continue operating as the project proceeded.

Danieli said Nucor initially had selected it to design and install a new degreasing section only, but as the companies worked together, they formed a closer relationship. As a result, Nucor ordered the new quenching section from Danieli.

Danieli said one of the main goals of the work was to make maintenance work safer, primarily by improving the roll changing system. Danieli said it designed a system for easier and safer roll removal by means of a special car and dedicated lifting tools.
