Danieli Chosen to Supply Technology for Fossil-Free Mini-Mill

The new Luleå mill will have the capacity to produce 2.5 million metric tons per year and employ two electric arc furnaces (EAFs). It will also be equipped with advanced secondary metallurgy, a direct strip rolling mill to produce specialty products from SSAB, and a cold rolling complex.

“The new mill will be supplied with a mix of fossil-free sponge iron from the HYBRIT demonstration plant in Gällivare and recycled scrap,” Danieli said in a company press release.

This technology will allow SSAB to decommission the already existing blast furnace–based production in Luleå, reducing the country of Sweden’s overall CO2 emissions by 7%, Danieli said.

Startup is planned for the end of 2028, with the mill operating in full capacity by 2029.
