Danieli Centro Met to Revamp Bloom Caster for Byelorussian Steel Works

Byelorussian Steel Works has contracted Danieli Centro Met to modernize the four-strand Voest Alpine Industrieanlagenbau (VAI) No. 3 bloom caster in operation at the company’s No. 2 steel meltshop in Zhlobin.

The project aims to increase the caster's operating flexibility, to include 200-mm round sections in addition to the present rectangular sections, and to increase product quality.

With the reconstruction, the caster will be changed from its current vertical-curved type (with plate mould) to a curved design with multibending radius. Capable of a total productivity of 800,000 tonnes/year of high-quality engineering steel grades, the revamped caster will feature a 1000-mm working level tundish; tube-type mould; external-type mould EMS; hydraulically-actuated oscillating table; and air-mist secondary cooling. The caster will also include a 9-module withdrawal and straightening unit designed for soft-reduction practice.

Danieli will also redesign the caster’s discharging area with new lateral comb transfer, walking beam cooling beds, and pawl-type collecting table.

Danieli Automation will implement the automation and process control systems, and will also provide the supervision services necessary to put the caster on stream. Startup of the machine is scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2008.
