Czech Mill Plans Caster Mold Improvements
10/16/2017 - ArcelorMittal’s unit in the Czech Republic, ArcelorMittal Ostrava, is upgrading a round bloom caster with a mold that uses fiber optics to read temperatures instead of thermocouples.
Made by SMS group, the mold technology allows the strand shell thickness and the thicknesses of the liquid and solid mold powder layers to be visualized.
"With the HD moldFO, SMS group offers a significant improvement in on-line signal acquisition through the use of fiber optics. With more than 200 possible measurement points on continuous casters for long products, the measurement density is significantly higher than when using thermocouples," the company said.
"The measurement points can be distributed over the whole height of the mold, and the positions of the measurement points can be freely selected."
SMS group will supply two new Convex molds; two mold tubes, each with 12 optical fibers; supporting software for the fiber optics; CONCOR rollers for the first segment; and a level 2 technology package to optimize the secondary cooling zones.
The project is to be commissioned next year.
