CSX Honors Tube City IMS for Green Shipping Practices

CSX Transportation (CSXT) has awarded Tube City IMS, LLC its first-ever Environmental Award, part of the company’s recognition of freight railroad customers whose shipping practices help to significantly reduce carbon emissions.

In 2008, Tube City IMS reduced carbon emissions by thousands of tons by shipping scrap on CSXT freight rail. By choosing to ship via rail, the company is also helping to alleviate congestion on the roads and conserve fossil fuels.

"Tube City IMS is honored to receive this prestigious award from CSXT," said Joseph Curtin, Vice Chairman of Tube City IMS. "Across our organization protecting the environment is of the utmost importance to Tube City IMS and this award stands as testimony of our teammates' efforts to preserve our environment for future generations.

Together with 18 other CSXT customers, Tube City IMS helped to avoid more than 1.2 million tons of carbon emissions in 2008 by shipping with CSXT versus the highway alternative. CSXT is recognizing these customers because they either they led their industry in 2008 using CSXT to reduce their freight emissions or showed the greatest improvement in emissions efficiency in 2008 compared to 2007.

CSX describes freight rail shipping as ‘the most environmentally-friendly mode of surface transportation,’ where one train is as efficient as 280 trucks, capable of hauling a ton of freight more than 436 miles on a single gallon of fuel.
