Cooperation Agreement Pairs Tenova EAF Know-How and GE Vernova Power Feeding Tech
06/12/2023 - Tenova and GE Vernova’s power conversion business have signed a cooperation agreement under which they’ll design and market tailored, medium-voltage power feeding systems for electric arc furnaces (EAFs) and submerged arc furnaces (SAFs).
According to Tenova, the collaboration is being built around GE Vernova’s advanced power supply solution, Direct Feed. Tenova said the AC-DC-AC solution is based on scalable patented back-to-back hybrid Modular Multilevel Converter topology and is meant to be directly connected to the grid (up to 60 kV).
Tenova said the goal is to provide EAF and SAF operators access to high electric power, even on constrained grids, and to reduce both operating costs and environmental impact of new and pre-existing furnaces.
“With this new collaboration, two companies sharing a common culture of transparency in business and passion for technology join forces to meet the ever-increasing expectations of a market in tumultuous development and bring the steelmaking industry one step further towards decarbonization,” said Paolo Argenta, executive vice president of Tenova’s upstream business unit.
“The vast experience of our companies in the respective technical fields, together with the expertise of our end users, allows us to bring to the market an effective, flexible, reliable solution to EAF and SAF operators,” he added.
