Converteam to Supply Electrical, Automation Systems for ThyssenKrupp’s Alabama Facilities

Converteam has been awarded a major order by Fives Lille Industries Inc. and SMS Demag for the supply of the complete electrical and automation systems for ThyssenKrupp's Greenfield combined carbon and stainless steel plant to be constructed in Mount Vernon, Ala.

As part of the contract, Converteam will supply full electrical and automation systems for three single-stand (Sendzimir) reversing mills and one skinpass mill for the stainless steel plant, as well as for four continuous galvanizing lines, one tandem cold mill coupled with a pickle line, and one standalone continuous pickle-line for the flat carbon steel plant.

Converteam’s scope of supply comprises engineering design, controls, automation, drives, manufacture, delivery, installation, commissioning and customer training. The company noted that its supply would be handled jointly by its French, German and North American units, drawing on each unit’s specific strengths, expertise and skills.

Converteam will work in close cooperation with major partners SMS Demag and Fives DMS, who are to supply the mechanical portion.

ThyssenKrupp’s new Alabama facilities will manufacture and process carbon and stainless steels for high-value applications throughout North America. When fully operational, the plant will supply a range of industries including automotive, packaging, construction, electrical and utility, in addition to serving manufacturers of appliances, precision machinery and engineered products.

The new facilities are scheduled to start production in the first quarter of 2010.
