Continental Design & Management Partners with Latrobe Specialty on Remelt Capacity Expansion

Continental Design and Management Group (CDMG) recently completed a $52-million capital investment project to expand vacuum remelting capacity for Latrobe Specialty Steel.

Project goals for the vacuum remelt expansion were to strengthen Latrobe Specialty Steel’s presence in the global specialty metals market by increasing their current production capabilities. The project allowed the company to increase its capacity to meet the demand for high-alloy specialty steels commonly used in aerospace and defense industries and also position itself to meet the quality demands of this industry sector.

CDMG’s professional engineering services included facility planning that required integration with multiple original equipment manufacturers (OEMs). Engineering services included the design of deep foundations to support the remelt furnaces, utility and interconnecting piping designs, power distribution and total electrical installation design. The electrical installation included an addition to the main substation and a new auxiliary substation in order to meet operational power requirements. CDMG also provided construction management services.

“The overall site coordination of various installation contractors was critical in maintaining the fast-track schedule set forth by Latrobe Specialty Steel,” commented Scott Snyder, Manager of Construction Services. “Along with this oversight, our CM team maintained the construction schedule and assisted with budget analysis.”

Latrobe Specialty Steel broke ground for the remelt expansion on a plot of land adjacent to existing operations facilities upon completion of feasibility studies and engineering. Site selection for the expansion met requirements set forth by the Environmental Protection Agency’s Brownfields and Land Revitalization Plan. A portion of the land is slated to be donated back to the community for development of a walking and biking trail adjacent to the Loyalhanna Creek.
