Consultant: Decarbonization Strategy Isn’t a Binary Decision
06/29/2021 - The global steel industry’s transition to carbon neutrality is being hindered by an either-or fallacy that is wrongly pitting two technologies against each other, a top steel decarbonization expert said Tuesday.
Speaking during the Association for Iron & Steel Technology’s annual conference and exposition, AISTech 2021, Carl De Maré said that current thinking about steelmaking decarbonizaiton offers two false choices: that hydrogen can – and must -- replace all coal, coke and natural gas; or that coal, coke and natural gas cannot be replaced and carbon capture therefore presents the only solution.
And that, he said, is the wrong way to approach the problem.
“Such a conflict is paralyzing all investments because as long as the end game is not clear, it is very hard to decide on the first steps,” he said in delivering the conference's Howe Memorial Lecture.
AISTech is taking place this week both online and in person in Nashville, Tenn., USA. A recording of his lecture can be found here.
