Commercial Metals Sets New Environmental Goals
06/28/2021 - Commercial Metals Company (CMC) will look to reduce its Scope I and Scope II greenhouse gas emissions intensity by 20% and increase its use of renewable energy by 12% as part of a newly revised set of environmental goals.
“We take our commitment to our people, customers, communities and environment very seriously, and the new sustainability goals we have established for 2030 demonstrate CMC's unwavering dedication to doing our part in the years to come," said CMC board chairman and chief executive Barbara R. Smith.
The new goals were included in the steel manufacturer’s latest sustainability report, which also states its intent to reduce energy consumption by 5% and water consumption by 8%.
“With an already low carbon footprint, and emissions that are currently well below the iron and steel sector targets set by the Paris Climate agreement below 2°C scenario, our targeted reductions will keep us on track to remain one of the most energy-efficient and green steel manufacturers in the world,” the company said in the report.
