Commercial Metals Names New President

The company on Tuesday announced that Smith will take on the additional duties effective 11 January 2017. As president and chief operating officer, she will have responsibility for all of Commercial Metals’ operational departments, both in the U.S. and abroad, the company said in an announcement.

Smith will continue to report to chairman and chief executive Joe Alvarado, who is handing off the title of president as part of the company's long-term succession plan.

"I am pleased to transition the role of president of the company to Barbara. She has brought about many positive changes since joining CMC. She is a true leader, and this larger role shows that Barbara has earned the full confidence of the board and management," Alvarado said in a statement.

Smith joined the company in 2011, when she came aboard as senior vice president and chief financial officer. She took over as the chief operating officer at the beginning of this year.

Prior to Commercial Metals, Smith served as vice president and chief financial officer at Gerdau Ameristeel Corp. She also spent more than 20 years with Alcoa, serving in various leadership roles throughout the business.
