Commercial Metals Marks Start of Oklahoma Mill Construction
04/29/2016 - U.S.-based Commercial Metals Co. broke ground on its new micro-mill in Oklahoma on Friday, kicking off a project that will help the company expand into five states.
“This event marks another historic day for CMC, the state of Oklahoma, and the city of Durant. We believe the addition of a second micro-mill to CMC's portfolio of highly efficient and customer focused production facilities will open new market opportunities and enhance CMC's position as a leading supplier of long products in the U.S. market,” said CMC chairman and chief executive Joe Alvarado in a statement.
The mill, which is being built by Danieli, uses a “continuous-continuous” process that melts, casts and rolls steel from in a single, uninterrupted strand. Compared the typical mini-mill, the micro-mill will have higher yields and lower energy consumption, the company said.
The is expected to create approximately 300 jobs.
It will be the second of CMC’s micro-mills. The first, built in Mesa, Ariz., was commissioned in 2009.
CMC has said the mill will allow it to better serve a growing North Texas market and expand into Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska, Arkansas and Missouri.
