Commercial Metals Company To Build New Micro-Mill in Eastern U.S.
01/10/2022 - Commercial Metals Company (CMC) announced this morning that it intends to build a brand-new long products micro-mill somewhere in the eastern United States.
According to an official press release, the new micro-mill will serve the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic and Midwestern regions. Site selection for the new mill is underway.
“This is an exciting new investment for CMC and our customers,” said CMC chair, president and chief executive Barbara R. Smith. “The new micro-mill will fortify our position in the large construction markets within the region and optimize CMC's existing Eastern U.S. operational footprint through enhanced production flexibility, improved service capabilities, and logistical efficiencies.”
Smith also noted that the new mill will benefit from the recent passage of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act. “We anticipate the legislation will stimulate substantial incremental demand for construction steel, particularly in the targeted geographies where core infrastructure is among the oldest in the U.S.,” she said.
Commercial Metals Company expects that following site selection and securing official approvals, the new micro-mill should take around two years to complete.
