Commercial Metals Co. Is Burning Daylight
12/17/2020 - Commercial Metals Company’s original micro-mill in Mesa, Ariz., USA, is now being powered in part by electricity generated from 100-megawatt solar array, the company reports.
In a statement, Commercial Metals said the mill is receiving electricity from the Saint Solar utility-scale generation facility, located about 45 minutes south.
"Our participation in the Saint Solar project underscores our commitment to reducing our carbon footprint further through the use of renewable energy as well as producing steel from 100% recycled scrap metal and being an industry leader in the sustainable steelmaking process," said Tracy Porter, executive vice president and chief operating officer.
Commercial Metals is planning to build a second micro-mill in Mesa, and it will utilize Danieli's "Q-One" technology allowing the electric arc furnace and ladle furnace to be tied directly to renewable energy sources, it said.
