CMC Steel Boosts EAF Operator Safety with Automated Motank Equipment
10/03/2007 - CMC Steel South Carolina reduces the need for a man-driven forklift at the EAF with the addition of Moré’s Motank machine, a dedicated remote-controlled truck equipped with a horizontal ram.
CMC Steel South Carolina recently started up new MOTANK equipment at their 82-ton EAF.
Supplied by Moré, the Motank machine comprises a dedicated remote-controlled truck equipped with a horizontal ram that helps to eliminate the need for a man-driven forklift at the EAF. The automated MOTANK is designed to clean the slag door while workers are in a safer position rather than operating machinery directly in front of the slag door.
Motank also helps to eliminate scrap buildup at the slag door when bucket charging by pushing the scrap deep into the furnace, away from the slag door. This also helps to avoid dropping scrap down into the slag pit.
By removing excess slag deposits, the automated equipment also helps the operating crew restore furnace operation after tapping and quickly regenerate its working level.
To date, the Moré scorecard lists a total of 12 Motanks supplied or under contract worldwide since 2003.
Located in Cayce, S.C., CMC Steel South Carolina is part of the Commercial Metals Co. The rebar producer has an annual capacity of 800,000 tons of products including angles, flats, channels, squares, rounds, and special shapes.
