Clariant and Midrex Renew Green DRI Technology Collaboration
04/22/2025 - Sustainability-focused specialty chemical company Clariant announced it has renewed its collaboration with Midrex to increase focus on natural gas-based direct reduced iron (DRI) technology for green steel production.
The companies said their natural gas-based DRI converts natural gas with recycled CO2 and H20 to generate reducing gas for the production process. Their technology combines MIDREX® Reformers with Clarient’s REFORMEX® Catalysts to increase activity and stability while reducing energy consumption and minimizing carbon emissions.
“Together with Midrex, we have agreed to intensify our focus on natural gas-based DRI, as it is a critical bridge technology that will greatly support the transition of the steel industry toward net-zero production,” said Georg Anfang, vice president of syngas and fuels at Clarient Catalysts.
MIDREX DRI technology avoids around one metric ton of CO2 per metric ton of crude steel, the companies estimate.
