Cisco’s TelePresence to Enhance Posco’s Business Communications
12/05/2007 - Cisco’s TelePresence solution, which combines advanced technology and interactive environmental elements, will allow Posco to conduct unique ‘in-person’ meetings between people at its Seoul office and its branches in Pohang and Gwangyang.
Posco has selected TelePresence technology from Cisco® to provide virtual, "in-person" communications options that will help the company improve collaboration and streamline its communication processes.
The first deployment includes three fully operational Cisco TelePresence System 3000 rooms that will connect Posco's Seoul office with the company's branches in Pohang and Gwangyang. These systems will help the company improve collaboration and increase decision-making efficiency as they are used for regular executive meetings. By communicating with each other across a virtual table in a conference-room environment, the company hopes to reduce the costs and environmental impact of business travel while improving business productivity.
Introduced in late 2006, the Cisco TelePresence solution combines advanced technology and interactive environmental elements to create unique "in-person" meeting experiences between people in various locations. Cisco will equip the three Posco facilities with its TelePresence System 3000, which consists of a three-panel, 65-inch plasma screen system and a specially designed table that seats six participants on one side or a "virtual table" for twelve. The system supports life-size images, using ultra-high-definition video (1080p) and spatial audio. It also includes codecs, cameras, a lighting array, microphones, and speakers, all of which have been specially tuned to optimize the experience.
Posco envisions that subsequent deployments will enable multi-site executive meetings between additional domestic and overseas offices.
"Posco has always pursued innovations involving companywide processes in order to maximize customer satisfaction," said Seok-Weon Yoon, team leader of Information System Group, Business Innovation Department, Posco. "We were impressed with the increased business efficiency and possible business transformation that Cisco's new communication technology can bring for us. Furthermore, the ability to integrate the Cisco TelePresence system with Cisco Unified Communications technology was another exciting feature of the solution. We believe Cisco will help us drive productivity and enable our employees to collaborate more easily through its IP networking solutions."
Posco's choice of Cisco TelePresence represents not only the first deployment in Korea, but also the first use of Cisco TelePresence technology in the Asia Pacific enterprise manufacturing sector.
