Chinese Steel Shipments to Latin America Up 73% Y-o-Y in January
03/16/2015 - In January 2015, finished steel exports from China to Latin America continue to grow at an accelerated pace, according to Latin American steel association Alacero.
These reached a volume of 1.1 million tons, an increase of 73% compared to the 623,000 tons registered in Jan 2014; and 24% more than the products received in the previous month (905,000 tons), also beating all 2014 inflows.
Total Chinese finished steel exports during January reached 9.4 million tons, 59% more than Jan 2014. So, Latin American share as exports destination grew to 11.4%, expanding 2 percentage points from December 2014 (9.4%).
The region was only surpassed as destination by South Korea that received 1.2 million tons (12.4% share of Chinese finished steel exports) in January 2015. Vietnam, third destination, received 905,000 tons (9.6%) during that month.

The main destinations for Chinese finished steel in January 2015 were Mexico (that received 209,000 tons, 19% of the regional flow), Brazil 188,000 tons, 17%) and Central America (131,000 tons, 12%).
During the first month of the year, the countries that proportionally grew Chinese finished steel imports most y-o-y were: Argentina (increased 427%), Mexico (325%), Ecuador (208%) y Dominican Republic (204%). However, Argentina and the Dominican Republic received very reduced volumes (around 30,000 tons a month, to reach 3% share each of the Chinese inflows to the region).
Imports from China by products Flat steel represented 58% of the finished steel imported from China to Latin America in Jan 2015, reaching 622,000 tons. According to the imported volume, the most important were:
>Sheets and coils of other alloy steel (282,000 tons, 45% of flat steel imports)
> Hot rolled galvanized steel (121,000 tons, 19%)
> Cold Rolled Coils (93,000 tons, 15%)
Long steel exported by China to Latin America in Jan 2015 reached 408,000 tons, concentrated in:
> Rod Wire (198,000 tons, 49% of long steel)
> Bars (149,000 tons, 37%)
