Chinese Province Cuts Steel, Coal Capacity
11/03/2017 - The Hebei province in China has cut 46.2 million metric tons of iron and steel capacity and 10.5 million metric tons of coal capacity, meeting its mandated reduction target, according to Xinhua, China’s state news agency.
"Reducing capacity is fundamental to supply-side structural reform and a way to curb air pollution," provincial vice governor Li Qian said.
The announcement comes as the northern steelmaking province enters the winter heating season, which worsens the country’s air pollution. According to the Reuters news service, controlling the problem has become a political priority, and the province promised it would hold officials to account if the targets were not met.
