China Steel Completes Intermediate Revamping of No. 3 Blast Furnace

About 100 people took part in a ceremony at which China Steel Corp.’s No. 3 Blast Furnace officially blew in. The ceremony was directed by Chairman of the Board Chia-Juch Chang.
No. 3 Blast Furnace underwent an intermediate revamping one year earlier than originally planned in an attempt to decrease the impact of the global economic crisis. The project was completed on schedule—and with no accidents—through collaboration of the revamping team, subsidiary companies, and construction companies.
China Steel President Yuan-Cheng Chen noted that all design, scheme, construction, and supervision of this intermediate revamping were implemented by China Steel Corp. and subsidiaries. NSE supplied the stave, PW R&E supplied the carbon block, and domestic construction companies provided fabrication and installation.
For its second campaign, No. 3 Blast Furnace operated nine years and three months, from blow-in on Jan. 15, 2000, to blow-down on April 18, this year with production of hot metal at 26.96 million tonnes.
The main features for this project included partial replacement of the shaft stave and hearth lining, overhaul of the top charging equipment and de-dusting equipment for cast-house and stock-house, and renewal of the hot stove branch and cast-house runner system.
China Steel claims the revamping turns No. 3 Blast Furnace into a highly efficient, energy-saving, less-polluting modern blast furnace.
