China Records August Increase in Crude Steel Output
09/14/2015 - Despite government-mandated mill shutdowns, China’s crude steel production grew in August, rising 1.7 percent from the previous month, reports BloombergBusiness.
According the news service, Chinese mills produced 66.94 million metric tons of steel during the month. The production increase came in spite of mill closures in the country’s Hebei province, a primary steel-making region.
The government had called for furnace shutdowns as a way to improve air quality in advance of a large parade celebrating the anniversary of World War II’s end.
Although production grew on a month-over-month basis, it was down 3.5 percent from the same month last year, according to Bloomberg. Production also was down through the first eight months of 2015, falling 2 percent to 543.02 million metric tons.
