China Intends to Idle More than 200 Mills in its Steelmaking Center
03/09/2016 - The Hebei province, China's steelmaking heartland, will close 60 percent of its steel mills by 2020 as part of the country's effort to curb excess capacity, reports Chinese business and finance magazine Caixin.
Citing provincial governor Zhang Qingwei, the magazine said new projects also have been banned until the province's steelmakers begin hitting a production ceiling of 200 million tons annually.
In the meantime, steelmakers in the province are under orders to throttle back production this spring and summer, reports The (London) Financial Times.
According to the newspaper, Chinese authorities want to ensure there are clear skies for the 2016 Tangshan International Horticulture Exposition, which will take place from late April to mid-October in the industrial city of Tangshan.
The International Association of Horticultural Producers, which accredits such expositions, describes the show thusly:
"Coinciding with the 40th anniversary of the Tangshan earthquake, the expo will demonstrate the vital role of greening cities with a theme of ‘City and Nature, Phoenix Nirvana.' Other aspects include fashion gardening, environmental protection, low-carbon lifestyles, and harmonious co-existence between nature and humanity."
The curtailments are expected to cut production at local mills in half, according to The Times.
