Cherepovets Mill to Achieve Wastewater Discharge Reduction by 2013

ОАО Severstal announced that its Cherepovets Steel Mill, part of the Severstal Russian Steel Division, will achieve a 200,000-m3 wastewater discharge reduction into bodies of water by 2013.

The company plans to achieve this reduction by closing down two of the five currently existent effluent discharge outlets.

Andrei Lutsenko, Manufacturing Director and Chief Engineer, Division Severstal Russian Steel, said: “In 2012, Cherepovets Steel Mill is going to allot some RUR 600 million toward implementing water-protective measures and maintaining appropriate facilities in good repair.”

Design documents have already been prepared, equipment purchased, and construction work is under way.

A key component of Severstal’s corporate social responsibility policy is a responsible attitude toward the use of natural resources. In October 2011, the company announced a major project to reduce atmospheric emissions at the Cherepovets Steel Mill. Between 2011 and 2015, investments in environmental projects at the Cherepovets Steel Mill will total approximately 9.3 billion rubles ($US 300 million).

Since the start of 2011, 14 new environmental projects and initiatives have been introduced across the Severstal Russian Steel division—half of which aim to minimize harmful atmospheric emissions, with the other half focused on reducing water pollution.
